The 400-year curse dragging Indonesia's capital into the sea.

Like many coastal cities around the world, Jakarta is dealing with sea level rise. But Indonesia's biggest city also has a unique problem: Because of restricted water access in the city, the majority of its residents have to extract groundwater to survive. And it's causing the city to sink. Today, Jakarta is the world’s fastest-sinking city.
The problem gets worse every year, but the root of it precedes modern Indonesia by centuries. In the 1600s, when the Dutch landed in Indonesia and built present-day Jakarta, they divided up the city to segregate the population. Eventually, that segregation led to an unequal water piping system that excluded most Indigenous Jakartans, forcing them to find other ways to get water.
To understand how it all ties together, and what’s in store for Jakarta’s future, watch the video above.

other cities in the region and comparing Jakarta to Tokyo is like comparing new york with moskow.....as the same region. funny to see indonesians opressing indonesians without even a hint of terms like segregation by wealth in this docu, while highligthing the evil colonism in dutch goverment time, who made it an actual functional 2million city from a tribal village and they were foreign rulers and segregated not by race, but by wealth. rich chinese had houses near europeans. enslaved populations (who existed allready in indonesian islamic culture before the dutchs arrived and remained to be a lowerclass to this day without calling them slaves by name for western cultural influence of recent years) were in non-interesting areas of the city for cheap work, like today. it is more omnipresent, that the former population (monarchic islamic structure of opression), the foreign colonizers (dutch european structure of individualism) and now-rulers (conservative islamic democracy) have the same view on the total population of Jakarta in segregation by wealth.
@Na Ma fak u
thanks vox of this sinking,i put this comment again bout 1years a go same sinking it was
@Na Ma I’m kidding!
@Aditya R. Suharto 👍🏻
So...the problem is former Europoean colonialism and racism and current Government incompetence
Ya silahkan WNI absen disini 🙋♂️🙋♀️
Jakarta: "Help! We are sinking! We are sinking!" Government: "What are you...sinking about?"
Allah wrath 🤣 Edit : Just joking, it's a climate change... Face it superstitious people.
omg the dutch really need to help indonesia 🤧
the dutch couldn't care less
The Dutch should pay for this.
its because people keeps throwing trash into the sea and the sewer and also they need wall maria
why don't they build aqueducts like Romans did in North Africa? Tunisia is still using them from getting clean water from a city called Zaghouan
Never like living there .. preferred living rural.
Just give Super Mario a call he will fix it.
2 many ppl on the planet...nature is solving this ..
Vox : "Jakarta is sinking" JKT 58 : "Media apa ini??? DASAR BuzzerRp!!"

If The Jakarta-City to Sinking in 2050 years , $o May Be this area to must have changed namely tobe *"A New Bikini-Bottom Megapolitan When $pongeBob & Friends"* Lived in there With The Amphiby-Cars Technology inside ?!
LoL. That topic about segregation makes zero senese. According to your video the reason of sinking is that indonesians didnt manage to provide piped water to their city for almost sixty years
Astaghfirullahaladzim 😢 Ya Allah Dunia sudah tua
Jakarta does not have dams?? Here in Manila all of our waters came from dams in the nearby mountains. We are not using ground waters.
viralkan..biar pemerintah nya gerak

Flooded 😐
California in 10 years
Him you know who: the flood would totally be vanished from the capital if I become a president. Also him, after becoming president: I think, we need to move the capital to Kalimantan The fact: several regions in Kalimantan including the future site of the capital also have been hit by the flood recently..
wait... is this the Hydro archon fault? or Mr anies Failure?
Because Jakartans are envious of Venice. Simple answer.
Im from indo sooo Iri bilang boss hahai
Today Jakarta is actually flooding about 2-4 meters
where
This same problem is also happening in my country the Philippines.
Short answer: Segregationist Dutch colonizers and settlers, groundwater pumping, and inability to build water infrastructure.
Jakarta sinking Year 2120 : Scientists found unknown sinking city. Scientists belike is this Atlantis
Kuala Lumpur watching this
Singapore watching this...
Tectonic plate movement and the Rim of fire and lets not forget Anak Krakatoa
A lesson for other countries to not vote corrupt, religious looking candidate
and thats become more worst cuz lot of young people leave their village to work and live in Jakarta city. thats make more buildings and concrete covering ground and water usage. pretty sure if sometime that city will be sinking by sea water.
cie yang nyari org indo awokawokawok :v
THANK YOU VOX 😭😭😭😭
I'm here for the comments :>
The other reason Jakarta is sinking is because the Dutch didn't built canals also unlike Jakarta the whole country of the Netherlands is sinking
Jakarta : *Is sinking* Jakarta Governor : "maybe it's because of bogor or depok, chill"
And we still poluting earth with co2
Vox: Jakarta is sinking German dude: Vat iz Jakarta sinking about?
Oh my country.....
And then we indonesian just need to build a frekn water pump floating house
It all caused colonized
What are you sinking about ?
Excellent it must sink.
Maybe it's a sign no-one should live there NOMORE
How it is the Dutch fault? There were less than 1 million people living in Jakarta when the Dutch reign ended. Now it’s 10 million. If all, it’s the past presidents fault for focusing the economic centre too much on such a city with a low elevation.
Leptospirosis: it’s free real estate
And you guys didn't want to move the capital??? Come on, even if it's expensive at least for future generations they can still Jakarta above water.
Like in the Philippines
Loony left wing media with their obsession with race and religion as usual.
Bcoz the current governor has no ability to execute the program, he is only talking and create an excuse day by day...poor jakarta governor 🙈🙈🙈🙈
Because it is too heavy?
I thought they said it was because of littering
So why its sinking
Western sustainability might not be the solution
Can I ask where to get the Batavia Map at 6.15? Thank you
Almost all problems (if you take a holistic look) boils down to rising population and limited resource. Developing countries will never develop because they do not have the money needed and by the time the money comes and a project is completed, the population had doubled, making the project insuffcient. This vicious cycle continues. Positive part is that, general population gets used to harship and thereby reducing the quality of life. This keeps the cost lower (for basic needs like food). Also, there are some people who has money and other who needs money and that differential keeps money flowing, but the money coming to individual is small (due to large population).
The progress of a nation will only happen if the society has the courage to change!

"It's only called a flood when your roof is below the water." - Jakarta's Governor -
In jakarta there is a lot of huge building, and i cant barely seen any jungle or wilderness in there
40 billion dollars to build a bird island instead of just giving the people better/sustainable water access......
Meanwhile me live in downtown south jakarta near west java who never feel such flooded, will gonna see uptown sink in 30 years,, the profit is beach isn't so far this time
solution is simple = EarthShip Homes
10:54 quote "Jakarta is sinking into the sea until its goverment figures out how to provide clean, piped water for its citizens" Hey Vox, actually current governor, Mr. Anies Baswedan have plan to sell Jakarta's share stock in liquor factory (PT Delta Djakarta) and then use those money to provide public utility with piping for clean water supply. However local MP member reject that plan (from opposition party of PDIP). It's been stuck in parliament since March 2019.
woah so its sinking and flooding at the same time?
Is this.. another example of the irrevocable damage of colonialism that the Dutch and British are failing to take adequate responsibility for? 👁️👄👁️
Fun fact : the word compound comes from the word kampung or kampong
its the other way around
its about that time tbh awokaokwok biar runtuh echo chamber jakartans
Another thing that should be considered is the people's and developer's mentality when building houses. Most of them still depend on wells not just because clean, piped water isn't provided by the government, but also to have cheaper living costs. Since most of us use pumps to pump the water from aquifers, water bill is now in the electricity bill. This way you can control your water usage and save electricity and eventually, money, on water. My point is, the economy also contributes to why people and developers choose to use aquifers rather than piped water. Clean piped water are supposed to be free of charge in my opinion.
@gundala petir Not the correct plan in my opinion. Correct me if i'm wrong tho, wouldn't they buy shares when it's at a low price with "bullish" potential? and If the price-per-share is already high, wouldn't that mean that the company is doing good and we should continue profiting from it rather than have some other company, from some other country, profit from it? Selling those stocks for a one time profit to fix the Jakarta's sinking issues just doesn't seem right. Again, correct me if i'm wrong. I only have experience from my short, part-time work in forex trading and from tycoon games. And also, I have seen many countries with their many liquor and alcohol companies and factories that have descent water piping network and treatment facilities. I think Jakarta's problem is more complex. For me, it's the crony capitalism that we practice from small scale to the more large governmental and corporation scale. That's where the money is lost in my opinion. It was never about the groups or parties from the start. They're as much of a problem as the regular people is.

The guy in the thumbnail is probably wondering why they just stood there and took photos of him instead of possibly helping.
Jesus love you, he died on the cross for you, accept him as your lord and savior he can change everything. For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life" (Jn 3:16" But you must repent too. From that time Jesus went about preaching and saying, Let your hearts be turned from sin, for the kingdom of heaven is near. (Matthew 4:17):

0:58 pantesan jakarta sering banjir tanahnya turun.
That is why here in the Philippines in 2004 they imposed a total banned for using deep well in Metro Manila and some provinces yet some is still using it even they know the risk because of "free" some cities and provinces experiences it right now a mild rain coz them a flood for a month.
Good luck to Philipines
the seaside area should not build residential areas. because it affects the land subsidence on the coast. hope the governor will pay more attention to the area
End of day no God will help u.... its humans and only v... sooner people realize better for all
Indonesian people are incredible, it's so unfortunate that their capital city is beyond overcrowded and full of litter. I hope they can resolve their issues before it's too late.
this is indonesia not Netherlands......
im an indonesian and i tell you why indonesia is sinking.. the problem is that the people itself doesnt really care about the environment and threw a lot of plastic bag filled with trash into the river, on a ditchc etc until the ditch basically cant flow the water and when the rain is coming it flooded the entire area. what's worse is that the people blame the government for not taking care of the environment. i dont know how to fix the mentality of my own people honestly :_(
You're seem missed the point. Vox video is about sinking land due to excessive ground water usage, not littering trash.
The Dutch government should help Jakarta.
I hate how jakarta always flood in the early of january
Good luck Malaysia
pack your bags, time to move to borneo
Yang kesini gara" tiktok kita satu server 👍
orang indonesia mirip warga india juga ya...
jakarta is sinking. Wait what?? Im not jakartans, but live in the same island. 😱
it has become the atlantis
This is so sad! ☹️ I pray and hope that they can move their home somewhere safe. 🤲🏻
I remember seeing so much floods in alot of places in Jakarta and i was scared that it would actually wipe it out
Does the Dutch feel shame for their colonial past or they are proud about it?
Come on we need a technology that can help Jakarta unsinking

What if there were no colonisation, no globalisation, no contact with Europeans or Americans, Asia would have been more friendly with nature than now.
The Dutch: famous for their ability to reclaim land, manage water and build great cities on marshland Dutch Colonists: haha water segregation go brrrr
Why do western media like BBC always use Borneo? Can't they just say Kalimantan etc. Borneo Island after all is made up of 3 countries and does not belong to a single country.
